Our Mission
The mission of Saso High School Prep is to provide exceptional preparation for the HSPT that empowers students to score as high as possible on the test, so that they have the best chance of acceptance into a Catholic high school.
Our Method
We teach students problem-solving frameworks they can use to solve the various questions they will encounter on the HSPT. In addition, we focus on strengthening fundamental math and English skills, which helps students not only on the HSPT, but also in their 8th grade studies. Because we understand the power of repetition, we provide students with plenty of practice to reinforce these frameworks and skills.
Our Philosophy
We believe every child has the ability to succeed. We strive to create an atmosphere that is encouraging and enthusiastic that focuses on individual improvement and progress. We build self-confidence in students by showing them that effort equals improvement and that hard work pays off.
Our Instructors
Steve Saso
Hi, I am Steve Saso, the founder of Saso High School Prep. I have more than 36 years’ experience teaching in Catholic high schools. I have been teaching HSPT® prep classes since 1996.
After graduating from Bellarmine College Prep in San Jose and Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, I began my teaching career at Jesuit High in Sacramento where I taught Algebra I and Algebra II. I then moved on to become Department Head of Religious Studies at Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland. Moving to San Luis Obispo, I helped re-open Mission College Prep where I served as Assistant Principal and Director of Admissions. Later, I returned to my alma mater and taught at Bellarmine for more than two decades.
While I was at Bellarmine, I began preparing students for the HSPT®. The program grew over the years, and now Saso High School Prep serves hundreds of students each year. Teaching has been my life’s passion, and I get great joy and satisfaction from helping young people experience learning breakthroughs and academic success.
Brian Saso
Hi, I’m Brian Saso. Whenever you reach out, you’ll get to chat with me!
As an eighth grader in 1998, I took my father Steve’s HSPT® prep class, and I have been helping him in the business ever since.
I have been teaching HSPT® prep classes for over a decade, and I am the main author of our class workbook. I can promise you that our curriculum is highly accurate, up to date (we update the workbook every year), and is some of the best prep material there is out there. We know the HSPT® inside and out.
I developed our online hub www.SasoPrepOnline.com where students take our HSPT® Assessment and Mock Exam (included with all prep courses!). I also created the Ultimate HSPT® Self-Study Course found there as well (free for summer students!)
I love motivating students to do their best, and I am passionate about helping them succeed on the High School Placement Test. My goal is to inspire our students to become lifelong learners (and readers!) and to instill in them the importance of hard work, perseverance, and a positive attitude.
I am married to April Saso, and we have a 1-year-old baby boy.

I’m from Brazil and I’m Brian’s wife. I have a bachelor’s degree in education and I joined the Saso team in 2016.
I’m always thinking about how to add more fun to our classes. You won’t be disappointed! This prep course is not your normal (boring) style of education! Brian and Steve are super energetic and extremely knowledgeable.
You will find me answering student questions during our classes, and behind the scenes, I’m passionate about marketing. Brian calls me the creative director, but you can call me Mrs. Saso.
